THE LITERACY REVIEW – VOLUME 13 You are invited to write a story or poem for possible inclusion in Volume 13 of the Literacy Review.
Some suggestions for topics: (These are only suggestions – you can write about anything you choose)
2. Gandhi, the Indian leader, said, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." Describe a time you stood up for something you believed in.
3. In your experience, when you leave one place for another do you leave behind the person you were?
4. If you could invite anyone, dead or alive, to dinner, who would you invite? Describe the evening.
5. Tell about a food that makes you think of a person or place.
6. What makes you smile?
7. What is the best gift you have ever given or received?
8. As a guide, give a tour of your neighborhood.
9. Describe "my special NYC"--a place you love that's not in the guidebooks. 10. Describe your best, worst, funniest or most unusual experience on the NYC subway.
Please keep in mind that these are only possibilities. We may make additional edits for correctness, clarity and length. Poems and shorter prose works are particularly welcome, but selections are based on the strength of the pieces, not their length. We have found that the strongest prose pieces:
* are contained narratives about one small moment, day or experience. * have titles that both describe the content and draw the reader in. * end with a surprise, narrative turn, reflection or realization.
Submission Guidelines
Submissions should be typed, double-spaced in 12-point type, in a conventional typeface, with one-inch margins all around.
Each should be sent as an individual Word document to your teacher (christophermilson@nypl.org)
Please include your Name, age (optional), gender, birthplace; how long in U.S.; and something about the writer that you would like readers to know. (This info will be the basis for the brief biographies next to the writers' photos. )
Photo Shoots: All published writers will be expected to attend one or two scheduled photo shoots, on Saturday, February 7th and Saturday, February 14th between11 am and 2 pm at NYU Gallatin. Further information will come when the writers have been chosen for publication. Celebration: Published writers and representatives of their sites will be invited to attend the book distribution, reading (by about 20 selected writers) and buffet dinner on Tuesday, May 5 from 5:15 to 7:30 pm at NYU. More info to follow.
